Google Improved Auto-Rotate on Pixel Phones

The last Android security patch showed a list of bug fixes and improvements taking care of long-standing issues. From system volume levels, intermittent restarts, and failing calls were all addressed. But there is one that we felt needed a special note on it.

Under the “Sensors” category of fixes, Google says that it issued “further improvements for auto-rotation response in certain device orientations.” Since there are only two directions and we have been complaining for a long time about how bad the Pixel auto-rotation is. This fix is not a coincidence.

Google improved it after so many years. And it looks that these improvements were for all currently supported Pixel phones (Pixel 3, Pixel 3a, Pixel 4, Pixel 4a, and Pixel 5).

I’ve updated to the new January patch on my Pixel 5 but I can not confirm that I see any difference in the auto-rotation performance. Hopefully, Google improved it, but I’m not finding any dramatic improvement on the different rotations. Let us know if you see anything special.
