iPhone 12 Pro just got an exclusive TikTok feature

introduces constantly new filters allowing users to transform faces and add fun effects to their videos. The latest release takes advantage of one of the new features introduced with the 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max last fall.

TikTok added an augmented reality filter, and if you got the iPhone 12 PRO, you'll be able to use the LiDAR sensor on the back of the phone to add new developed augmented reality effects to your clip. For example, TikTok featured a fun New Year's Eve ball-dropping effect that can appear in clips shot with an iPhone 12 Pro.

This filter is its first AR effect using LiDAR technology. AR is not a new technology for social media apps like TikTok, but LiDAR “light detection and ranging” it's a whole new game.

LiDAR detects the presence of real objects by beaming waves out bouncing with physical things then returning to the sensor for detailed, accurate measurement. This allows LiDAR-based AR effects to interact with the physical world around. In TikTok's new filter, for example, a mass of glitter spills all over the room, covering objects.

In the case of the iPhone 12 Pro, the LiDAR sensor is used for other things tan a filter or fun effects. It helps make night portrait mode work much better and improves the camera focus.

TikTok is not the first to use LiDAR tech. Snapchat started in October, and users are allowed to create their own there.  Right now we don't know if these effects will arrive on an device, or if Android will adopt LiDAR sensors of their own, it remains to be seen.
