In January 2021, will release the new Galaxy S21 series, with the S21 Ultra as the new top model. This will offer enhanced specs which include an updated camera system completely redesigned in terms of design and functionality. And for the first time, Samsung will make an S-series smartphone compatible with the S Pen. This stylus pen was the main feature of the Galaxy Note series for years and now will be made available as an optional accessory for the S21 Ultra.

The Samsung S21 Ultra with S Pen will be released exclusively in two colors: Phantom Black and Phantom Silver and after three months in the brown and dark blue variant are also expected.

The S Pen is included as standard with the Note models, for the Galaxy S21 Ultra Samsung will be an optional accessory. Samsung may decide to include a free S Pen during the pre-order period, but we do not have any other information on pre-order promotions.

What is evident is that there is not a stylus compartment in the Samsung S21 Ultra does, unlike the Galaxy Note smartphones. To store the S Pen, Samsung will offer two different cases in which the S Pen can be stored: one a Samsung Silicone Cover and a second option a Samsung Clear View Cover.

The Evolution of the Samsung S Pen

In 2011, Samsung released its first smartphone with S Pen; it was the Galaxy Note (N7000). This phone had a 5.3-inch display – minuscule in today's terms but for those days it was a relatively large screen, which is why this device was also called a phablet – a cross between a phone and a tablet.

The Galaxy Note immediately became a huge sales success for Samsung. Since then, Samsung released a new Note smartphone every year. The stylus pen has been refined many times and the number of applications has also increased significantly over the years.

Since the Galaxy Note 5, the S Pen also looks like a real pen. In 2018, Bluetooth functionality was added, enabling users to use the stylus and control the smartphone remotely like taking pictures. Many Note users now consider the stylus pen an essential part of their smartphone.

The S21 Ultra's Bluetooth S Pen has the same functionality as that of the Note 20 Ultra. The input delay is no longer felt, making writing with the stylus natural than ever, and has a feature that makes it possible to convert handwritten text to typed text.

We've heard many stories that Samsung wants to cancel the Galaxy Note series somewhere in 2021.

Specs of the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G

The Samsung S21 Ultra is equipped with a 6.8-inch QHD+ curved OLED display with a 120 Hertz refresh rate. A tiny hole is made in the display for the camera with an astonishing 40 megapixels resolution.

The camera system at the rear was completely revamped. It contains a renewed 108-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 10x zoom, and finally a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x zoom. If that wasn't enough it got incorporated a laser AF sensor as in the Note 20 series.

The European S-Series models will be powered by Samsung's Exynos 2100. The US models will be driven by the new Snapdragon 888 from Qualcomm. The Galaxy S21 Ultra will also offer 5G support and  WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, it will be powered by 11 OS combined with the One UI 3 interface.

The 5,000 mAh battery will be built in, and it will last at least 12 hours. Chargers and earplugs are not included in the box but Samsung will offer these essential accessories at a reduced price.

Colors

At launch, two color variants are expected for the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G: Phantom Black and Phantom Silver. The camera system and metal frame will have a glossy look, and the housing will have a matte appearance. By summer Samsung will release a Phantom Brown and dark blue color as well.

Later by April Samsung also intends to release a Titanium version of the new top model, which will be much more expensive than the previously mentioned color variants.

On the memory front, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will have 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The RAM is expected to be 12GB to 16GB – depending on the model.

Optional accessories

Samsung introduces new accessories for its S-series models every year. Various covers and cases will be made available to optimally protect the device, including a Smart Cover, a Silicone Cover, a Leather Cover, and a Protective Stand Cover, this will be particularly important since the camera system, has a large notch on the back of the cases. When a smartphone falls usually falls on one of the corners – which makes it important that all corners are well protected but unfortunately this does not seem to be one of the cases.

With the release of the phone, a new set of earbuds will also be made available. Since no charger is included in the box, it will be offered as an optional accessory. The S21 Ultra will probably support 30 Watt fast .

Finally, the S Pen will be offered as an optional accessory to the Ultra model. Based on the price of the S Pen for the Note 20 Ultra, you can expect a sales price of about € 40.

When will be the Galaxy S21 released?

We do not have an official date but will be someday on the second week of January and due to the pandemic probably live streaming. The preorder period will start immediately after the official introduction.

We can assume that Samsung will have some pre-order promotions for the top model. For example, consumers will be able to choose from a free S Pen or free Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds.

The expectation is that the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G will be marketed at  € 1,300 (12GB ROM / 128GB RAM).
