Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 hands-on review: Bettering the most popular foldable

Samsung makes no secret of the fact that the Galaxy Z Flip 3, not the Fold 3, is the most popular foldable smartphone in the world, and we can see why. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 hopes to improve upon the $999 clamshell design that conquered the market. These are our initial thoughts regarding the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

The entirety of Samsung’s Unpacked portfolio resembles its 2021 lineup. Almost all of the differences between this device and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 are internal. The most significant modifications are:

  • Brand-new chipset
  • 512GB capacity
  • 12% larger battery
  • Enhanced charging
  • A more durable foldable display
  • Brighter sensor camera
  • New colors

While it may appear that Samsung has made minimal modifications to the hardware, there are in fact a handful. The hinge has been made significantly thinner. Not in terms of height when lying flat, as shown below, but rather hinge “mass.”

Samsung claims that the internal display is 45% stronger than that of the Flip 3, however, we are unsure how this was accomplished. Inside, you’ll find the same foldable 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. This year, the display crease is slightly less evident, but it is still hardly imperceptible. Samsung has improved the display’s external cover glass to Gorilla Glass Victus Plus.

The chipset of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has been upgraded to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 CPU. Additionally, there is a new 512GB storage model, and if you take advantage of Samsung’s pre-order offer, you’ll receive twice as much storage for the same price. Additionally, you may trade in a qualified gadget for a discount of up to $900 and a free silicone ring cover or strap case.

This year, the outer panels are available in Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold, and Blue, while the frame is available in black, silver, and gold. Samsung’s Bespoke Edition offers up to seventy-five unique combinations of frame and front and back panels.

What’s the latest on the cameras?

The Flip 4’s cameras are not all that different from those of its predecessor. You will once again have access to dual 12MP primary cameras and a 10MP front-facing camera. The primary 12MP sensor is now 65% brighter with 1.8-micron pixels compared to the Flip 3. Stay tuned for our comprehensive Galaxy Z Flip 4 review to find out how well it performs in low-light environments.

Except for the primary sensor, which is 65% brighter than that of the Flip 3, the most of camera specifications are comparable to those of the Flip 3.

The selfie camera is equipped with innovative software features. When using Quick Shot to take selfies in clamshell mode, you can now preview your snap on the Cover Screen. Even aspect ratio changes can be made without ever having to open the Flip 4. The artificial intelligence (AI) in Samsung’s camera enables crisper photos with less blur, and the AI Stereo Depth Map Technology promises to keep details in focus.

Samsung also promotes “FlexCam,” which is essentially employing the Flip 4’s cameras in a half-closed mode. This allows you to set your phone down while taking a group shot with a delayed shutter or when vlogging or streaming hands-free. FlexCam is compatible with Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook, and it operates when the Flip’s hinge is open at an angle of 75 to 115 degrees.

The Flip 4’s battery capacity has been increased to 3,700mAh, including 25W rapid charging (courtesy of an optional extra charger). This will provide a 50% charge in approximately 30 minutes. In addition, 10W+ Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 and reverse wireless charging are included for recharging accessories such as the new Galaxy Buds 2 Pro or Galaxy Watch 5.

Android 12 and One UI 4.1 are included on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. Samsung offers four Android OS updates and security patches for five years. As we’ve previously stated and will continue to reiterate, this is the type of update commitment that all Android OEMs should adhere to.

The external Cover Screen has also acquired some new abilities. These include accessing your fast settings, responding to text messages, unlocking your compatible vehicle, making calls, and paying using Samsung Wallet. Using new Smart Things widgets for the Cover Screen, you can now control your connected devices.

If you’ve longed for a device that better complements your Galaxy devices, the Flip 4 is ready to assist. Themes may now be synchronized across your phone, watch, and tablet. You may also design unique clock widgets and add video backdrops to the Cover Screen. In our in-depth assessment, we’ll elaborate on the item’s coolness.

Lastly, when the Flip 4 is in Flex Mode, the bottom half of the display can be used as a touchpad. We’re not really sure why you would want to do this, but let’s go for now.

Aside from a few minor tweaks and added capabilities, the Flip 4 appears to be largely similar to the Flip 3, with a few minor changes and additions. We’ll have to wait and see if that is sufficient to preserve the title of the world’s most popular foldable. When last year’s model was so fantastic, incremental tweaks are all that can be made without increasing the price we all fell in love with.

Starting at $999 for the 8+128GB model, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is available for pre-order as of August 10. Utilize the pre-order offer to quadruple your storage space for free.
