Pete Lau, a former Oppo executive joined forces with Carl Pei to launch a new smartphone startup. Both together with a small team unveiled the first OnePlus One in 2014 and it was the first market’s first flagship killer. The smartphone brought a high-end chipset and a set of interesting specifications combined in a modern design and powered by CyanogenOS. The OnePlus One sold excellently allowing the company to design and sell more devices in the next year. Since then it has been six years and OnePlus is one of the most successful companies in the smartphone market. However, last year, it lost one of the minds behind its success – Carl Pei.
With the launch of the OnePlus 8T, Carl Pei announced he was leaving the smartphone brand. He was starting again from scratch to have the freedom to bring new innovative products. After a few months of rumors, today, Carl Pei announced his new venture: Nothing. No, not “Nothing” a brand called “Nothing”.
Located in London the company is described as a new, forward-thinking consumer technology company. Interestingly, the launch tweet comes with the following message:
| “WE RETHOUGHT EVERYTHING AND CAME UP WITH NOTHING”
With the brand’s announcement, “Nothing” brought nothing, no product to the market. We do not know what kind of products will be developed by the brand. Some rumors say it will be an audio-oriented company.
Back in December, Mr. Pei announced the company got a 7 million seed investment from many prominent names in the high tech scene.
“IT’S BEEN A WHILE SINCE ANYTHING INTERESTING HAPPENED IN TECH. IT IS TIME FOR A FRESH BREEZE OF CHANGE. NOTHING’S MISSION IS TO REMOVE BARRIERS BETWEEN PEOPLE AND TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE A SEAMLESS DIGITAL FUTURE. WE BELIEVE THAT THE BEST TECHNOLOGY IS BEAUTIFUL, YET NATURAL AND INTUITIVE TO USE. WHEN SUFFICIENTLY ADVANCED, IT SHOULD FADE INTO THE BACKGROUND AND FEEL LIKE NOTHING.”
The brand is set to launch its first smart products during the first half of 2021.
